Facts

  • According to Sean Penn, he had been preparing for the filming of this film for almost ten years. He read the book of John Krakauer overnight in 1996, after which he immediately began negotiations with McCandless's parents about its adaptation. However, when everything was ready for filming, the parents refused ... Penn waited patiently for their consent until 2006, when they themselves called him and said they were ready to give their permission for the film adaptation [3] .
  • To fulfill the main role in the film, Emil Hirsch lost 18 kilograms.
  • When Sean Penn first felt the urge to make this film (and this happened as soon as he read the book of John Krakauer, released in 1996), he saw Leonardo DiCaprio as Mackandless and Marlon Brando as Ron Franz.
  • The film is completely shot in real locations, that is, where McCandless lived and suffered. The film crew had to travel to Alaska 4 times to capture all the seasons.
  • The moose that Christopher killed in the film was actually found dead in Alaska.
  • Davy Chase auditioned for the role of Tracy, but did not get it.
  • The scene when a bear approaches Chris, but Chris does not respond to him and the bear leaves, sends us straight to Jack London 's story " Love for Life ", where the exact same story was described.
  • The film contains a quote from the fifth chapter of the first part of Leo Tolstoy’s novel “ Family Happiness ”: Sergey Mikhailovich ’s words “I have lived a lot, and it seems to me that I have found what I need for happiness” and further.
  • All the original songs in the film are performed by Eddie Vedder , frontman of the grunge band Pearl Jam .
