し in hiragana and シ in katakana are symbols of the Japanese kana , used to record exactly one mora . In the Polivanov system, it is written in Cyrillic: “si”, and in Latin as “shi”. In the international phonetic alphabet, the sound is recorded: [ɕi] listen to either [ʃi] close to english pronunciation. In modern Japanese, it is in the twelfth place in the syllabic alphabet , after さ and before す .
