Origin
え came from the simplified spelling of kanji衣, and エ came from kanji 江.
In the early Old Japanese language, the sounds e and e were different and different kana signs were used for them:
| hiragana | katakana | |
|---|---|---|
| / e / | 𛀁 | エ |
| / e / | え | 𛀀 |
Over time, both of these sounds turned into e and the signs え and стали began to be used to record them.
Phonetics and transcription
え and エ correspond to the sound / e / in the International Phonetic Alphabet . In the Polivanov system, they correspond to the Cyrillic “ e ”, therefore, when transcribing Japanese words into Russian, え and エ are written as “e”.
え, in addition to directly pronouncing and writing as “e”, it can also lengthen the sound of the previous syllable ending in “e”, for example, ね え ( ne: is not it). When transcribing Japanese words into Russian, this is made out either with the help of a macron (ē), or a colon (e :).
