The name Tepe-Kermen is of Turkic origin: in translation from Crimean Tatar it means “hill-fortress”, “fortress on top” ( töpe - hill, peak, kermen - fortress). The same name also refers to the remains of the medieval fortified city (according to other sources - the monastery) Tepe-Kermen, in several tiers covering the top of the mountain. The area of the cave city is about 1 ha.
In fact, it was not a city, but rather a castle fortress [2] , on the territory of which the population of the district was hiding from the enemy’s troops, which explains the lack of water sources.
The city existed from the VI to XIV centuries . The greatest prosperity reached in the XII - XIII centuries . The concentration of artificial caves is high - more than 230. There is a cave church of the 12th - 9th centuries with carved crosses, graves, inscriptions in Greek. Among the shrubbery and grass, traces of foundations are visible. The walls are not preserved. According to some versions, the death of the city is tied to the raid of the Golden Horde Beklyaribek Nogai in 1299 .
It is still not clear from what source the inhabitants of the city took water. Wells on the territory of Tepe-Kermen were not found, and all the famous springs are located at the very foot of the mountain.
