The organizers of the race in Monaco, frightened by the possible repetition of the tragic Grand Prix of Spain two weeks ago, decided to reduce the number of cars starting in the race to 18 and change the starting grid to reduce the likelihood of accidents traditional for Monaco in the first corner. Jacques Laffitte returned to Williams, Graham Hill took part in the Grand Prix for the last time, Hesket provided the third car to Torsten Palm, whose sponsors paid for his participation in the race.
Lauda again won the pole, followed by two Shadow. The Austrian kept the first place after the start, and the second Jarje caught the barriers in the first round twice and dropped out of the race. The Shadow co-pilot, Tom Price, also dropped out of the race after a collision with Vittorio Brambilla. Lauda only once lost the leadership to Ronnie Peterson during the race, after which he brought the race to victory. Due to the rain, the riders could not overcome all the planned 78 laps of the race and it was stopped after two hours from the start.
