Short Biography

Ivan Konstantinovich Tumanov was born in 1907 in the village of Surovtsevo, Kalinin region. He graduated from the School of Marine Pilots in 1934. He took part in the war in Spain, the Soviet-Finnish war. During the Great Patriotic War he served in parts of the air forces of the Northern Fleet .

I.K. Tumanov arrived in the Northern Fleet as part of the 72nd mixed air regiment, and commanded a squadron. As a rule, he personally drove his squadron into battle. After wounding the commander of the Hero of the Soviet Union regiment Georgy Petrovich Gubanov in September 1941, he was appointed to his post.

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 18, 1942, for the courage, bravery and heroism in the fight against Nazi invaders, the 72nd Red Banner SAP was transformed into the 2nd Guards Red Banner Combined Aviation Regiment. March 20, 1942 the order of the People's Commissar of the Navy on organizational changes in the aviation of the fleet was signed. In the 2nd Guards Mixed Aviation Regiment, the personnel of the 78th Regiment with all aviation equipment were transferred. Hero of the Soviet Union Major B. F. Safonov became the commander of the 2nd Guards Mixed Aviation Red Banner Regiment. The former Safonov squadron from the 2nd regiment, which was armed with I-16 aircraft, transferred to the 78th regiment, captain I.K. Tumanov was appointed its commander.

After the death of Hero of the Soviet Union twice, B.F.Safonov was the commander of the 2nd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment . He died on December 6, 1942, performing a combat mission. The name of I.K. Tumanov is immortalized on the memorial plaque of the Northern Fleet Air Force Museum and on the monument to the North Sea aviators who died at sea.
