Career
Mayer began his career at Fortune Records, a Detroit record label owned by Jack and Devora Brown. He will remain with this label for 6 years, recording a small number of songs.
In 1962, when Meyer was 18 years old, he entered the Top 40 hit parade, with the song “Village of Love”, recorded in collaboration with The Fabulous Twilights. The song was released on Fortune Records, which was then leased to United Artists Records for distribution. Subsequent recordings, such as Leave Me Alone (62 years old) and I Had A Dream (63 years old) did not repeat the success of Village of Love (although both records, especially Leave Me Alone, were on sale OK). In 1966, Mayer released "I Want Love and Affection (Not The House Of Correction)", a defiant new work in the spirit of James Brown (James Brown). He then broke with Fortune Records due to disagreement. [one]
After Fortune Records
After Fortune Records, Mayer's whereabouts were virtually unknown. For decades, only vague rumors circulated about him. However, he “surfaced” in 1980 to record “Raise the Curtain High”. This will be Mayer's only record from 1966 to 2002. The disappearance of eastern Detroit in the ghetto over the next two decades, various rumors, have turned Mayer into an urban legend. However, after the release of Norton Records “I Don't Want No Bald-Headed Woman Telling Me What to Do” in 2002 (never before released in 1968), Meyer was inspired by the recording and appeared again. [2]
Mayer finally returned to music in 2002. His once sweet voice became deep, rattle-growling, which gave his later albums a completely new sound. He played in clubs and festivals, acquiring a new generation of fans with his exciting live shows. [3]
In 2004, Mayer returned to the studio to record “I Just Want to Be Held” for Fat Possum Records (Mississippi), a label known mainly for releasing records of unknown blues musicians. In 2005, he toured with friends musicians Fat Possum. In 2006, Stardumb Records, a record label based in Holland, released a single containing 3 songs taken from an album recorded on Fat Possum. [four]
Mayer's latest album, “Why Don't You Give To Me?”, Was released on August 21, 2007 via Alive Records, featuring Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys, Matthey Smith from Outrageous Cherry, Troy Gregory (Troy Gregory) from The Dirtbombs, Dave Shettler from SSM and The Sights.
Lately, Mayer could be heard performing with a lot of soul and garage bands. The Detroit Corbas made a cover version of the song “Village of Love” in 1996. And “Leave Me Alone” was redone by The Hard Feelings and Holly Golightly; Eve Monsees, The Exiles and the Gibson Brothers participated in the recording of "I Had A Dream".
Death
Within a year of completing his first European tour, Mayer suffered strokes. After months in the hospital, Nathaniel Mayer died on November 1, 2008 in Detroit, Michigan. [1]
