Story
The main storyline is based on the events taking place in the " dashing nineties " in the fictional city of Tikhodonsk (presumably the author allegorically refers to the city of Rostov-on-Don ), the time of the formation of organized crime, when street punks go astray into organized, so-called "brigades", racketeering and lawlessness flourish. In the center of events the main character Philip Korenev, aka “Fox”, a former opera , freed from the colony. At this time, in the hometown, there is a division of spheres of influence between criminal groups. Returning to Tikhodonsk, the hero forcibly finds himself in the center of a showdown of three criminal gangs - and continues to follow his principles, while having a wealth of operational experience and excellent knowledge of thieves' orders, the Fox easily performs various combinations and intrigues in his interests. The plot of the film is built non-linearly, the viewer is presented with the development of several storylines that are interwoven with each other, sometimes with the participation of the same heroes, ultimately leading to a single outcome. This style of presentation of the plot is very similar to the style of the author of the novel of the same name, according to which the film was shot.
As a prologue, the viewer is shown a scene where the main character Korenev Filipp Mikhailovich in the form of an ordinary militia of the USSR model reads the oath of a police officer.
The film begins with a scene in a colony for convicted former police officers, the last day of serving a sentence of Fox, who received a sentence for the so-called strict observance of the principle "if evil is not punished by law, then it must be punished in other ways." Throughout the film, plot inserts follow, referring to events that happened earlier than the main storyline, namely, how Fox saved his agent from the inevitable death - the prostitute Tamara from the assassination of Sergei Sikhno, nicknamed “Crazy,” to whom she gave direct evidence. When a corrupt policeman Bobovkin, working for the criminal authority of the Shaman, substitutes Korenev and transmits a video to the prosecutor’s office, who forcibly extracts confession from Sykhno during a testimony on the spot, the prosecutor releases Sykhno, suspected of a series of murders, and against Korenev institute criminal proceedings for abuse of power. Released Sikhno, trying to get rid of the main witness, begins to search for Tamara, but the Fox intercepts him, takes him out into the forest and kills him. On the last day of serving his term, Lisa is attempted, but unsuccessfully, and he himself realizes that the killer was sent by order of the Shaman, since Sikhno was the shaman’s nephew and he had personal scores with Fox.
In Tikhodonsk, a series of criminal squabbles continues between different-format criminal groups. One of the parties to the conflict between the groups is the contradictions between the criminal world of the traditional format, whose representatives strictly honor the " thieves' law " and the so-called "new" ones - a separate criminal formation, consisting usually of young people, mostly "not trampling the zone", who do not respect " law " and solving their problems "outrage" with the help of weapons and force. The shaman, who managed to take control of the group of "new", is trying to expand his circle of influence, which inevitably causes discontent of the thieves. Under the control of the Shaman, the city has one of the largest brigades under the leadership of Barkas, with the help of which the Shaman, by means of a bloody massacre, forces the “northern” ones out of the shopping center controlled by them. Also, the Shaman is forcibly trying to take the banker Mikhail Khondachev under the "roof", but the latter categorically does not want to enter into dialogue with the Shaman. A friend of Khondachev’s guard, Lisa Larchenkov’s friend, advises taking Korenev as a team, as he has experience in solving such problems with “not entirely legal methods.” The shaman, dissatisfied with Khondachev’s refusal, decides to eliminate the banker and, with the help of Barkas, organizes an armed attack on him. As a result of the shootout, Barkas kills Larchenkov and several people from the guard, but he leaves Khondacheva alive, and tells the Shaman, as if the gun had misfired. Khondachev suggests that Fox solve his problem of eliminating the Shaman and Barkas, hoping for his personal interest, since the Shaman set him up, and Barkas killed a friend, but the Fox refuses. Thief in law Winter offers Barkas to come under his control, but Barkas refuses to follow his principles. The shaman, after a misfire with the banker, realizes that Barkas becomes uncontrollable and decides to deal with him by blowing up the car, but by a lucky chance, Barkas remains alive. After that, Barkas comes to Winter and offers to join forces against the Shaman. Barkas "clogs the arrow" to the Shaman, but the Shaman, through Bobovkin, decides to merge this information into the police, and to come to the arrow without weapons, so that the security forces detained Barkas and his brigade with weapons, and to get out of this situation clean.
Barkas’s right hand is Kent (Yusup Bakhshiyev), a hip-hop fan and smoker of marijuana , who is actively involved in all criminal actions of the brigade. One day, Barkas accidentally catches Kent behind the clogging of the “jamb” and remarks to him that Kent philosophizes “Grass is not a drug”, while in the headphones of the player Kent’s song symbolically plays the song “Pasta” with the words “For the evening of the plan - marijuana .. . ".
In between, a street lawless, mentally unstable and mentally retarded Ambal with his henchmen Parrot and Baska gathers his team and tries to take his place in the criminal hierarchy of the city, as a result of which he enters into a skirmish with Barkas near a nightclub. Ambal tries to threaten with a knife, standing at the entrance of Rynda, but Barkas, who arrived in time, scares off the Parrot and Baska with a pistol, and Ambalu cuts his face with the handle of a pistol. After an unsuccessful “meeting” with Barkas, Ambal realizes that in confronting other brigades without “trunks” he has no chance and goes to illegal arms dealers. At a meeting with the “hucksters,” Ambal kills them from the weapons they brought for sale, after which he makes a “hit” at the point covered by the Barkas brigade and kills his people. Barkas, indignant at the insolence of Ambal, gathers a brigade and gives the task of tracking and killing him. The people of Barkas find Ambal in a nightclub where a skirmish ensues, but Ambal miraculously remains alive, while several people of the Barkas brigade die. Entered into excitement, Ambal “runs over” to a casino controlled by the King. The King, confident in his authority, personally goes to the “arrow” with unchallengers unknown to him, but Ambal, without even talking, calmly shoots the King and his people from machine guns.
At this time, the thief in law Cross watching the zone sends the common thief to the thief in law Father Malyava (note - note, message on paper; jargon) that the deadline for his release is appropriate and a replacement must be sent from him, so how in the zone itself there’s no one to watch. The most vivid contradiction between the traditional criminal system and the new order is shown in the scene when a young thief in law Kalgan visits the zone to replace the Cross. The cross, a thief in the law of the old format, is surprised that despite his years and unshakable authority, he had not heard anything about Kalgan and did not know anything about him. In order to finally dispel doubts, the Cross arranges a check for Kalganu, but the latter, by virtue of not knowing thieves' law and not accustomed to such treatment, is trying to confirm his authority by demonstrably impudent and defiant behavior, as he used to do this in the wild and defiantly spits on the floor before the Cross. “But you can’t spit in the hut, it’s a spit on the whole way of life of people,” sums up the Cross (the term “people” in this context means “thieves”), after which he concludes that Kalgan is none other than the usual " orange "(approx. a man who undeservedly arrogated to himself the position of a thief in law), who was crowned by mistake. The cross makes Kalgan wash the floor, which “offsets” him and gives the offensive nickname “Spit”. These actions of the Cross provoke indignation at large among the close associates of Kalgan, who, together with the thief who crowned Kalgan, Broom, come to the Father with a request to assist in the elimination of the Cross after his release. The broom offers Father a deal, namely, he promises to put in a good word for him when the “northerners” throw a present for the shopping center captured by the Shaman. A father who has long lived in the wild, understands that he himself has already departed from some radical thieves' traditions, and the freed Cross does not appreciate his current lifestyle, therefore, not wanting to enter into conflict, agrees to help in the murder of the Cross.
On one of the city streets, Fox accidentally meets Kent, who smokes marijuana in a Lincoln Mark VIII car under a bridge. Acquaintance is made between Fox and Kent, and together with Havana music ( Orishas - Madre) they ride around the city together and smoke "grass . " Impressed by Kent's stories about Cuba , Fox decides to go there and breaks up with Kent near a travel agency with the signboard “Cuba is an island of freedom”. The agency Korenev met with a travel agent Lyuba Tomilina, but he could not arrange a trip to Cuba due to the lack of a foreign passport. To understand the criminal situation in the city of Fox, he finds his former agent named "Bedbug", who successfully disguises himself as being surrounded by the Father. After the Shaman felt danger from Barkas, he finds the Fox and offers him cooperation, explaining that they are even for the Sikhno murder, since the Fox served time for this, and the shaman completely transferred the blame for the death of Larchenkov to Barkas.
Continuing to swagger, while in a busy street on one of the streets of the city of Ambal, he forcibly grabs and puts Lyuba Tomilina in a car. A passing policeman, friend Lisa Krylov, who, ironically, does not have a service weapon, tries to intervene to help Lyuba, but receives a bullet from Ambal.
