History
The first settlers appeared at the beginning of the XVI century . The settlement was the center of the Panozersky graveyard as part of the Lopsky graveyards . In 1596 a parish church was built in the name of the prophet Elijah. According to legend, a local resident Motan Malovets walked to Kiev on foot for utensils necessary for the new church. In 1660, the church burned down, then the Russian-Swedish war ravaged the churchyard, in 1918 Panozero survived the invasion of Finnish troops . In 1933 the church was turned into a club, lost its tent and octagon and was covered with a gable roof.
The presence in Panozero of a church dedicated to St. Ilya predetermined the patronal feast of the settlement - Ilyin’s day, August 2, according to a new style. From the recollections of the villagers it follows that on this day the village was inundated with festively dressed people gathering from all over the district. Someone came on foot, someone on boats, more often came to relatives, but even if there were none, the villagers received strangers. The holiday began with a visit to the church, then sat down at the tables, a playground for games and dances was organized in the center of the village, after a short break the festivities continued in the evening. The next day, the center of festivities moved to the other side of the village and was accompanied by dancing and singing.
Culture
Panozero was included three times (in 1996-1997, 1998-1999 and 2000-2001) by the World Monuments Watch Foundation in the list of one hundred monuments of world culture that are in danger of destruction.
In architectural monuments, the influence of Karelian and Russian construction traditions is most clearly traced. In Panozero, you can see the houses characteristic of the northern Karelians - complexes that combine residential and utility rooms under their roof.
In 2005, the village was awarded the Europa Nostra medal for the development and preservation of European cultural heritage [5] .
Currently, the village annually hosts the folk festival "Panozero - the pearl of the north."
Monuments
In 2006, a memorial sign “Symbol of Honor” was opened in Panozero. Thomas Villoch - Norwegian architect, representative of the European Federation for the Protection of Artistic, Natural, Historic Monuments and Sights “Europe Nostra '” passed a memorial sign to the residents of Panozero.
