Gopher (tree)

The construction of Noah's Ark ( James Tissot , 1896-1902)

Gopher ( Hebrew גפר ) is the tree mentioned in the Bible from which Noah's ark was made ( Genesis 6:14 ). In the Vulgate, it is designated as lignis levigatis .

The name of this tree is found in the Bible only in the Book of Genesis when God indicates to Noah about the construction of the ark. The gopher tree (resinous tree), which is mentioned in the Bible, was, according to some, cypress or cedar [1] . However, cypress ( brooch ) and cedar ( erez ) in the Bible have their own designations. According to Archimandrite Nicephorus, "it is more natural to admit that under this word we mean resinous trees that are difficult to rot and suitable for building ships, such as cedar, cypress, spruce, pine, and others from coniferous species ." [one]

Trees, called cypresses today, grew in abundance in that part of the world; they were a favorite material for the construction of ships by the Phoenicians and Alexander the Great, and remain so even to this day, since they are resistant to water and do not rot. There is information about the doors and pillars of cypress, standing for 1100 years.
