Phosphatidylcholine
Phosphatidylcholines are a group of phospholipids containing choline . Also included in the lecithin group. Phosphatidylcholines are one of the most common cell membrane molecules.
Structure and Functions
Lecithins, like simple fats, contain structural residues of glycerol and fatty acids, but they also include phosphoric acid and choline . Lecithins are widely represented in the cells of various tissues; they perform both metabolic and structural functions in the membranes. Dipalmitillecitin is a very effective surface-active agent that reduces surface tension and thus prevents the adhesion of the internal surfaces of the respiratory tract in the lungs. Its absence in the lungs of premature newborns leads to the development of respiratory failure syndrome .
