Built by Queen Elizabeth in the 16th century on the Lee River, at the request of Cork citizens to scare away pirates and robbers. However, for many centuries, the building was used for balls and feasts. In 1827, the castle burned down and was reconstructed within two years. Architects of the 19th century added three more floors to the castle and transformed the appearance of the building in the Neo - Gothic style.
In 2001, the castle was bought by Cork Corporation, after which it housed offices, a restaurant and private residences. Currently, the castle has an observatory.
