Biography

Louise Weber was born into a Jewish family of immigrants from Alsace . Her mother kept laundry in Clichy. At the age of sixteen, Louise herself went to work in the laundry room at Rue de la Goutte d'Or . However, all her thoughts were connected with dancing; secretly from her mother, she borrowed the clothes of the clients left for washing and in the evenings went to dance in them in some of the nearby clubs [1] . Louise also worked as a flower seller in Parisian passages, danced in the small dance halls of the Parisian suburbs, then danced in a circus and cafe on Montparnasse , including in Closérie de Lila .

In 1889, Charles Sidler invited her to the newly opened Moulin Rouge . Here she began to dance chahut (a kind of cancan) for the first time with Jules Renaudin ( French Jules Renaudin ), who sold wine during the day and danced at night under the stage name Valentin le Désossé ("Valentine Boneless"). Louise used to empty the glasses of customers, for which she received her nickname [1] .

At that time, Louise was 23 years old, and she was extremely artistic and direct. It was she who owned the idea of the final ending of the legendary dance: whirling around in a frantic rhythm, throw up my leg in a dizzying jump and sit down with a screech. The crowd gathered in crowds to see this issue, which eventually formed the basis of the main show "Moulin Rouge" [2] .

In 1890, the future King Edward VII , the son of the famous Queen Victoria , visited the Moulin Rouge. Passing through Paris, the Prince of Wales booked a table in a cabaret to look at the famous French cancan. When dancing, La Gulu recognized the crowned lady and, without any hesitation, shouted to him, greeting: “Oh, Gaelic, you have champagne!”

La Goulue met Renoir , agreed to become his model, he introduced her to the circle of sitters, posing for artists and photographers. Achile Delme made a series of nudes with her. The dancer has become synonymous with cancan and Moulin Rouge, she was called the Queen of Montmartre . Since 1893, La Goulue also performed in the Olympia concert hall.

In 1895 , famous and rich, La Goulue left the Moulin Rouge. In December 1895, her son, Simon-Victor, was born. The father remained unknown, but journalist Victor Collin gave the child his name. Louise invested most of her capital in a booth at the fairground. Friend of the dancer, artist Henri Toulouse-Lautrec kindly agreed to paint the scenery, and the institution opened. However, the audience, accustomed to the special atmosphere of the cabaret, did not show interest in the fair booth. Despite the efforts of Louise to make her establishment as spectacular as possible - her repertoire included belly dancing and competitions in the French wrestling and acting as a tamer of predators, she went bankrupt.

On January 24, 1904, La Goulue and her husband were attacked by a cougar.

Together with her husband, magician Joseph-Nicolas Droxler, La Goulue decides to devote himself to the career of a trainer. As a pair of tamers, they take part in all the major circus shows in France, such as F ête à Neu-Neu and F oire du Trône . In 1904 and 1907, animals attacked them during a performance, and both escaped death at the very last moment.

Unhappiness continues to haunt La Gulya - her husband dies in World War I , her son Victor, whom she called Bouton d'Or , dies in 1923 at the age of 27. Out of despair, she begins to drink [3] .

For some time, La Goulue worked as an actress, including in the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord , then fell into depression and alcoholism, often was sick, but used her former fame: she went to Moulin Rouge from old times, gave autographs.

Jean Gabin and Maurice Chevalier invited her to go on stage and show off to the public. During these years, La Goulue lived in Montmartre , in the Pigalle quarter. Film director Georges Lacombe directed it in the short documentary The Zone ( 1928 ). In 1928, La Gulya, flabby, in beggarly clothes, sold nuts, cigarettes and matches on the corner of the street next to the Moulin Rouge. Almost no one recognized her.

Suffering from dropsy, La Goulue died on January 30, 1929 in a Paris hospital. In 1990, her remains, by order of the then mayor of Paris, Jacques Chirac, were reburied with great fanfare at the Montmartre cemetery .
