Castle History

In 1174 , the estate belonged to John of Edlingham. In 1294 , his descendant Walter sold Edlingham to William de Felton, who significantly strengthened the castle by building a rampart and a watch tower. In 1396 , the castle was inherited by Elizabeth de Felton. Her husband, Sir Edmund Hastings, built a solar observatory in the castle. The descendants of Elizabeth and Edmund lived in the castle until 1514 , and then it was rented by George Swinburne, whose family kept the castle on loan until the beginning of the 18th century.

By this time, the castle gradually fell into decay. Back in the middle of the XVII century. most of the buildings were dismantled for building houses in a neighboring village. In 1978 , the castle passed under the tutelage of the state.
