Kazan Military District

The Kazansky Military District (KazVO) is an operational-strategic territorial association of the armed forces that existed at various times in the Russian Empire and in the USSR. The county office was located in Kazan .

Kazan Military District in the Russian Empire

The Kazan Military District was formed by decree of August 6, 1864. It included the territories of Kazan , Perm , Vyatka , Penza , Simbirsk , Saratov , Samara and Astrakhan provinces . In 1881, its territory included the territory of the abolished Orenburg Military District . The Astrakhan, Ural and Orenburg Cossack troops were subordinate to the command of the okrug.

The composition and number of troops on the territory of the district was constantly changing, it included infantry divisions, artillery brigades, separate battalions (line, reserve, local), a large number of other parts, hospitals and warehouses. On the territory of the district acted Volsky cadet corps. The district commander in the line of the military department subordinated to Izhevsk Arms, Izhevsk Steel, Kazan Gunpowder, Sergievo-Samara Explosives, Samara Pipe Mills.

In the Russian-Japanese war in the district, the 54th, 61st and 71st infantry divisions, the Orenburg Cossack division, the Ural Cossack brigade were formed and were sent to the front. In the First World War, the 4th Army was formed in the district, a large number of individual brigades and regiments. By the beginning of 1917, the district troop strength was about 800,000 soldiers and officers.

By decree of March 30, 1918, the district was disbanded (in fact, the process of disbanding lasted until May 1918). In accordance with the decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR of May 4, 1918, the territory of the former Kazan Military District was divided between two newly created districts: the Volga and Ural districts with centers in Samara and Yekaterinburg, respectively.

Kazan Military District in the USSR

In the USSR, the Kazan Military District was formed by the order of the People’s Commissar of Defense of the USSR dated July 9, 1945. The territory of the district included the Kirov region , as well as the Tatar , Udmurt , Mari and Chuvash Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republics [1] . The district administration was formed on the basis of the field administration of the 48th Army . The district headquarters (headquarters) was stationed in Kazan.

By order of February 4, 1946, the district was reorganized into the Kazan Territorial District, troops transferred to the Volga Military District . The district was abolished on May 6, 1946, the disbanding of the administration was completed in June of this year.
