Church of the Virgin Mary in front of Tyn ( Czech Kostel Panny Marie před Týnem - Týnský chrám ) is the dominant of Prague's Old Town Square , the main parish church of the Stare Mesto district. The construction of the cathedral began in the XIV century , and was finally completed only in 1511 . At the beginning of the 15th century, the Tyn Church became not only the spiritual center of the Old City, but also the main Hussite church in Prague . In 1621, the cathedral passed to the Jesuits . At this time, the golden bowl , the symbol of the Reformation , and the inscription “Truth is conquering” were withdrawn from the main statue.
At the base of the cathedral are Romanesque and early Gothic foundations. In the XI century there was a small Romanesque church. In the 13th century, a Gothic building was built instead. In the XIV century, the construction of the temple began again. He became the main temple of Stare Mesto . Authorship is attributed to Mathieu Arras and the younger Peter Parler . Parler's style is clearly visible in the lace of the windows of the main nave and the western window. Gothic architecture is in perfect harmony with the decoration that appeared in subsequent centuries. A significant part of the interior is decorated in the Baroque style [2] .
The baroque altar was executed in 1649 by the artist Karel Shkreta .
The great astronomer Tycho Brahe is buried in the cathedral.
Interesting Facts
- One amusing legend is associated with the golden bowl seized from the main statue. This golden cup was chosen by the family of storks, which made their nest there. Like all storks, this one carried frogs to its family, which periodically fell out of the beaks of the family. Once a frog fell on the head of an important person, for which this person was ridiculed by the townspeople. After that, the storks were evicted, and the cup was removed (according to another version - covered with boards).
- Another interesting story is associated with the construction of the Tyn Church. The tree intended for the construction of the roof was borrowed to create the gallows for execution on the Old Town Square of the last Hussite hetman and 50 of his supporters.
- Some gravestones in the temple are damaged, and this is no accident: after all, in ancient times it was believed that stepping on the stove was a sure way to get rid of toothache, which was done with great zeal by the townspeople.
- The church burned in 1679, after which the main nave became lower, the overlap dates back to the Baroque period. If you look closely, you will notice that the towers have different widths.
- Czech singer Karel Gott recorded one of his most successful albums, Christmas in Golden Prague, in Tyn Church in September 1969. In the Czech Republic, this album was released under the title "Vánoce ve zlaté Praze", and in Germany - "Weihnachten in der goldenen Stadt".
