He was born on February 4, 1913 in the village of Kabanya Kupyansky district of the Kharkov province in the family of a student of the Kharkov Imperial University Vladimir Fedorovich Savelyev, a future doctor.
From September 15, 1924 to June 1, 1928 he studied at the first seven-year labor school of the city of Kupyansk (before that he studied at a rural school). After the seven-year plan, he entered the agricultural mechanization department at the Kupyansky Agrarian Industrial College (there simply weren’t any other opportunities to continue his education), which he graduated in 1932 with the qualification of “agricultural mechanic”. For a year he worked as a machine operator in the construction of the Kupyansk Sugar Plant .
From 1933 to 1938 he studied at the Physics Department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Kharkov State University with a degree in Solid State Physics . Upon graduation, he received the qualification of a physicist in the specialty "solid body" and a diploma with honors.
After graduating from the university, he worked for three years as a junior research fellow at the Ukrainian Institute of Physics and Technology , where in February 1941 he defended his thesis on " Thermal conductivity of steel at low temperatures."
From October 1940 to June 1941, he worked as a senior lecturer at the Department of Solid State Physics of Kharkov State University , first as a part-time worker, and for the last few months as a full-time employee.
Member of World War II . He served in the Special Moscow Air Defense Army , which guarded Moscow from air raids of the Third Reich .
After demobilization in July 1946, I. V. Savelyev joined the Laboratory No. 2 of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Kurchatov Institute ), the department of thermal control devices (now the Institute of Molecular Physics, Russian Science Center ). Under the guidance of I.K. Kikoin, the department dealt with the problem of separation of uranium isotopes by the gas diffusion method . For a series of works performed in this field, I. V. Savelyev received the USSR State Prize (1951).
In 1952 he received a doctorate in physics and mathematics .
In September 1952, he began working at the Department of Physics of the MMI as a professor (part-time).
March 21, 1955 became a full-time professor at MEPhI (order No. 59 of 03/23/1955).
From June 30, 1956 to April 28, 1959 - Deputy Director of MEPhI for Academic Affairs.
In 1959 he was elected head of the Department of General Physics, which he led for 26 years. [one]
The author of the famous “ Course in General Physics ”, which has been one of the main textbooks on general physics for university students for more than a decade.
Awards and titles
Laureate of the Stalin Prize ( 1951 ), awarded the Order of Lenin ( 1951 ), two orders of the Badge of Honor ( 1954 , 1966 ), and the Order of the Patriotic War II degree ( 1985 ). Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the RSFSR .
