International Standard Music Number ( ISMN ) is the standard for ten-digit alphanumeric identification of musical editions. The standard is developed in ISO ( ISO 10957 ).
The international standard numbering of musical publications is carried out under the direction of the International Agency ISMN ( English International ISMN Agency ). The international agency ISMN centrally provides ISMN numbers to the national ISMN agencies of the countries participating in the ISMN system. In the Russian Federation, the functions of the national agency ISMN in 2007 were assigned to the Russian Book Chamber .
ISMN is composed of four blocks separated by hyphens:
- M prefix (required to distinguish from ISBN ),
- publisher ID
- ID of a specific publication,
- one check digit.
A music edition can be assigned both codes, both ISMN and ISBN. Unlike ISBN, ISMN does not include publishers by country.
The check digit is calculated according to the following algorithm. Each character in the ISMN code is multiplied by its weight. The sign weights are alternating 3 and 1. The prefix M always has weight 3, the next sign is weight 1, the next sign is weight 3, and so on. The prefix M is assigned a digital value 3. The digital values are multiplied by the corresponding sign weights, then the resulting values are added up. The amount received is divided by 10 and the whole part is taken from the resulting private. It will be a check digit.
For example, for ISMN code M-060-11561, the calculation of the check digit will be like this:
3xM + 1x0 + 3x6 + 1x0 + 3x1 + 1x1 + 3x5 + 1x6 + 3x1 = 9 + 0 + 18 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 15 + 6 + 3 = 55
Insofar as , the check digit is 5, and the full ISMN code for this publication is M-060-11561-5.
