Area Geography

The territory of the district includes two large islands separated by a small river Smolenka : Vasilievsky island and the island of Decembrists , as well as a small sulfur island .

The total area of ​​the district is 2.15 thousand ha [3] , this is one of the smallest areas of St. Petersburg.

The area of ​​green spaces is 118 hectares, of which: 51 hectares of the cemetery (the largest is Smolenskoe ); the rest of the green spaces are in the Rumyantsevsky, Opochinsky and Skippersky gardens, the Decembrists garden , two small parks, as well as squares. The total length of the streets of the district is 90 km. The pavement area is 198 ha.

Until December 2016, during the summer navigation period, when building bridges on the Neva for several hours, land communications with other areas of St. Petersburg were completely interrupted. In December 2016, the central section of the Western High-Speed ​​Diameter [4] was opened, which provided the possibility of round-the-clock transport links with the rest of the city.

Vasileostrovsky market

In 2019, he was the first to enter the list of markets that will turn into a European food market with a cheese factory, panoramic windows and a courtyard. By the summer of 2019, the city’s first reconstruction of the space into a modern European food market for 2,000 people with its own cheese factory, markets along huge panoramic windows and fresh products from direct suppliers will take place there. Vasileostrovsky district

Vasileostrovsky was one of the first 15 districts [6] formed in Petrograd in March - May 1917 .

On April 9, 1936, the Sverdlovsk district was allocated from the Vasileostrovsky district, the border between the Vasileostrovsky and Sverdlovsk regions passed along the 12th and 13th lines of V.O. (The 12th line and territory east of it, as well as the islands of the Decembrists , Volny and Serny belonged to the Vasileostrovsky district, the 13th line and to the west to Sverdlovsky).

On June 1, 1961, the Sverdlovsk district was abolished, and its territory was again annexed to the Vasileostrovsky district [7] .

According to the 2002 census, about a quarter (25%) of the working population is employed in industry. Children and adolescents account for 16%, people of working age - 58%, retirement age - 26%.

The population density is 11,260 people per square kilometer, according to this indicator the Vasileostrovsky district is one of the first places in Russia.
