Story
At the age of ten, Stephen learns that he is an adopted child. Since then, he had an obsession - to find his own family. Therefore, he becomes a policeman. But being on the verge of being at home, he does not receive an answer to his main question: “why me?” By that time, Steve was already quite a man, he had everything: good work, a loving wife (Debbie, Leslie Mann ) and a child . Moreover, he is a hidden homosexual .
Having an accident, Steve Russell realizes the full transience of life. That evening, he decides to live the second half of his life, no longer restricting himself to the norms of public morality and not hiding his orientation . But realizing that “being gay is an expensive pleasure,” the hero strikes hard: he turns one scam after another until a logical outcome comes — a court, a term, a prison.
Here Steve meets his true love. A simple prisoner, Philip Morris ( Ewan McGregor ) - a man with a good soul and a broken heart - becomes his dearest and closest friend. Since then, Steve Russell seeks to protect his happiness from all the hardships of the world. After leaving prison, he seeks early release for a friend. Not wanting to grind the fragile idyll of relationships in the millstones of life, Steve decides on another scam. And everything would be fine if it were not for human envy: a colleague and a boss set on a sly cops.
Philip Morris, learning about the misadventures of a friend, credits him with the rank of traitors and severs all relations with him. Steve Russell can only fight for his love. He manages to escape from prison several times using various tricks, but he is caught and returned back. The final escape, using a simulation of AIDS death, succeeds, and Steve comes to release Philip as a lawyer. However, among the jury is his former colleague and Steve is imprisoned for life . At the same time, he is almost never released from the punishment cell, leaving only an hour a day for a shower and charging under supervision. Prohibition of wide rental
In the United States, this film could be banned, as distributors thought it was "too homosexual ." They feared that the distributors would never be found, and the future of the film could be limited to a DVD format. [3] [4]
Lewis Theis, Director of Advertising and Marketing, TLA Releasing said:
“... there were too many sexual scenes in the film that I had never seen before in films with famous actors ... I was very surprised, but the sex scenes appeared on the screen in the first ten minutes from the beginning of the film ... As for the pictures for the LGBT audience, then they are still underground . Hollywood makes its main films for a wide audience, otherwise they simply will not pay off ” [5]
At the request of the distributor, too frank scenes were cut out of the picture and the number of references to same-sex love was reduced. [6]
