After the Italian Grand Prix, it became known that the FIA ​​tribunal still excluded Hunt from the results of the UK Grand Prix, and thus, Lauda’s separation from Hunt increased by 12 points - now Nicky was ahead of the opponent by 17 points for three races before the end of the championship. "Williams" put up a second car for Chris Amon, but in training, he collided with Harald Ertle and injured his legs. Ertle received back injuries, both pilots did not participate in the race. James Hunt won the qualification, Lauda started in sixth place.

Hunt lost the start to second-place winner Ronnie Peterson, while Patrick Depaye beat Brambilla in a third-place dispute. At the end of the first round, Brambilla lost fourth place to Mario Andretti.
