On Ensign, Patrick Neve replaced Chris Amon, who had suffered a previous accident in Sweden. Jacques X and Henri Pescarolo, who left the championship to participate in the races in Le Mans, returned to the system, and Guy Edwards returned to the cockpit of the second Hesquette. After qualifying, James Hunt and Nicky Lauda settled in the front row of the starting field. The start was better for the Austrian, who took the lead, but already on the eighth lap on his Ferrari the crankshaft fell apart and the leadership passed to Hunt. Clay Regazzoni tried to keep up with the Englishman, but on the 17th lap in his car the engine also failed. Hunt was the leader throughout the remaining distance and won. Ronnie Peterson’s descent and Scheckter’s engine problems paved the way for John Watson, who was initially disqualified due to a mismatch in the size of the rear diffuser, but was later returned to third place.
