Guryev, Semyon Emelyanovich

Semyon Emelyanovich Guryev (September 10 (21), 1766 - December 11 (23), 1813) - Russian mathematician and mechanic , professor , academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences since 1798 , member of the Russian Academy since 1800 .

Released from AISHKK in 1784 with a bayonet- cunker to corps officers. He studied hydraulics in England ( 1792 ), then taught mathematics, artillery and navigation at various educational institutions in St. Petersburg. Since 1798 - professor of mathematics at the School of Naval Architecture. In 1813 he taught at the Institute of the Corps of Railway Engineers [1] .

The author of works on geometry , mathematical analysis , mechanics . He tried to prove the fifth postulate of Euclid. He was actively involved in the development of the theory of equilibrium of arches . He translated and wrote several textbooks used in Russia throughout the 19th century. Much attention was paid to the methodology and methodology of mathematics. He organized the publication of the first scientific journal of the Academy in Russian ("speculative research", 1809-1819, a total of five volumes were published).
