Café de la Paix is a famous cafe in the 9th arrondissement of Paris . It was designed by Charles Garnier , the author of the project of the Paris Opera building, located on the same square.
History
The cafe opened on June 30, 1862 as a cafe and restaurant of the hotel with the same name, which was later renamed the Grand Hotel, serving visitors to the 1867 World's Fair . The proximity to Opera Garnier attracted many celebrities in the cafe. Visitors to the cafe were Pyotr Tchaikovsky , Jules Massenet , Emil Zola , Guy de Maupassant .
In 1896, movie shows were organized at the cafe, organized by the rival of the Lumiere brothers Eugene Piroux . During the “Beautiful Era”, visitors were, in particular, Sergey Diaghilev , Prince of Wales , future British King Edward VII , Tristan Bernard , Jules Renard , Spanish King Alfons XIII , Shah of Iran Mozafereddin .
A radio studio was set up at Café de la Paix, from where direct broadcasting to the USA was organized, the program “This is Paris”, which included Yves Montand , Maurice Chevalier and Henri Salvador . In December 1942, under the leadership of the Gestapo, the Soviet intelligence officer Leo Grossfogel was arrested in a cafe.
