General information
The name of the region is connected with the name of its owner Murzakan Shervashidze, the son of Kvapu Sharvashidze, who became the ruler of these lands at the end of the XVII century [1] . Samurzakano translated from Georgian literally means the place of Murzakan. [2]
The Principality of Samurzakan was abolished by the Russian authorities at the end of the Russian-Caucasian war . In 1864, Abkhazia was renamed the Sukhumi military department of the Russian Empire, and Samurzakan police was organized in Samurzakan [3] .
According to the Abkhaz researcher T.A. Achugba, the name “Samurzakans” was confirmed by the Abkhazian population of this region according to a report in the Black Sea Herald newspaper dated September 16, 1899: “Sovereign, Emperor Nicholas I in 1840,” the article says, “ pitying Samurzakani for their special merits, the Banner of St. George, by a self-signed signature on the banner, expressed: “To our gracious Samurzakan tribe.” After that, the Samurzakans find it inappropriate to call themselves either Abkhazians or Mingrelians ” [4] .
