Biography
The son of a regimental priest. He studied at the Kamyshinsky, then at the Saratov Theological Schools, and later at the Saratov Seminary ( 1840 - 1844 ). He began to study at the Medical and Surgical Academy in St. Petersburg, but seven months later he moved to the law faculty of St. Petersburg University (graduated in 1851 ).
He made his debut in print with the article “Karamzin as a translator and connoisseur of Shakespeare” ( Northern Review , 1849, No. 2).
He taught Russian literature at the Page Corps, then at the Pavlovsk Institute. In 1856, according to a denunciation of his proximity to a circle of Petrashevists , he was removed from teaching. In 1857 - 1860 he lived in Western European countries. He took part in the publications of A.I. Herzen . Living in London , was the teacher of Herzen's daughter. For the publication initiated by Herzen, he translated from the English language "Notes" of Princess E. R. Dashkova (1859).
Since 1860, the actual editor, then the publisher of the magazine "Russian Word" . In 1862, the Russian Word, simultaneously with Sovremennik, was closed. Upon its resumption, the publisher Kushelev donated his publishing rights to Blagosvetlov, who attracted DI Pisarev , V. A. Zaitsev , and N. V. Shelgunov to work in the journal. After the final closure of the "Russian Word" in 1865, Blagosvetlov began to edit the journal P. I. Shulgin's "Case", which he did until his death. Member of the organization "Earth and Freedom". Arrested in April 1866, released in June of the same year for lack of evidence.
He died on November 7 (19), 1880 in St. Petersburg . He was buried on the Literary bridges of the Volkovsky cemetery [5] .
