The parliamentary elections to the Mejlis ( Parliament of Turkmenistan ) were held on December 14, 2008 . In two provinces , Lebap and Mary , a repeat vote was scheduled for December 28, 2008 and February 8, 2009, respectively. [1] The number of members of parliament was increased from 65 to 125 (while the People’s Council was abolished) under constitutional reform on September 26, 2008. [2] These were the first elections since Turkmenistan gained independence, in which theoretically other parties were allowed to take part, except the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan , according to the new constitution, which no longer defines Turkmenistan as a one-party state. However, no legitimate opposition parties were nominated, and the fact that elections took place in single-member constituencies significantly reduced the opposition’s chances of getting representation in parliament.
