History
One of the first cities captured by the Arab army during the Arab conquest of Egypt . According to some reports, the first mosque on the African continent, the Sadat Kureish Mosque, was built in Bilbeis. The city played an important role in the struggle for control over the Fatimid visor : first in 1164 , when Assad al-Din Shirkuh, together with his young nephew Salah ad-Din Yusuf [2], was besieged in the city by the combined forces of Shawar and Amori I of Jerusalem for three months ; then in 1168 , when the city was attacked by the Amory army, who took the city three days later, on November 4, and massacred the city.
Bloody atrocities created outrage among the Egyptian Copts , who saw deliverers in the crusaders , but suffered no less than the Muslim population of Bilbeys. The Copts ceased to support the crusaders and united with their non-Christian neighbors against foreigners. In 1798, the fortifications of the city were rebuilt by order of Napoleon . Today in Bilbeis is the Egyptian Air Force Academy complex.
