The 47th entry draft of the National Hockey League 2009 took place on June 26 and 27, 2009 in Montreal ( Canada ) in the home arena of the most titled NHL club - Montreal Canadiens . The Bell Center went through the process of securing the rights of NHL clubs to the most promising young hockey players in the world. It was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the 24-time Stanley Cup winner . The draft returns to Montreal after 17 years.

The NHL draft was first held in Montreal in 1963 , before that the clubs had attracted young hockey players to their ranks without any rules and restrictions. Until 1984, drafts were carried out only in Montreal - in various hotels, in the league office, in the old Montreal "Forum". Then the right to organize this event was given to various cities in North America, and only three times Montreal again became the center of the talent fair (in 1986 , 1988 and 1992 ).
The main favorites for the first draft pick of 2009 were Canadian striker John Tavares and Swedish defender of the club "MoDo" Victor Hedman. For 247 matches in the OHL, Tavares scored 433 points (215 + 218). The statistics of the Swedish defender are more modest.
According to the results of the draft lottery, the New York Islanders got the first choice. As a result, the Islanders were the first to choose John Tavares .

In total, 210 hockey players were selected during the draft, including 102 from Canada, 55 from the USA, 24 from Sweden, 10 from Finland, seven from Russia, five from Slovakia, three from the Czech Republic, as well as one from Belarus, Denmark, Germany and the UK .
7. Russian players were selected 7. This is the lowest result in the history of participation of Russian hockey players in the NHL draft . Dmitry Kulikov (under 14th) was selected under the highest number, Dmitry Orlov (under 55th), Igor Bobkov (under 76th), Sergey Andronov (under 78th), Alexander Avtsin (from the Russians) were also selected under 109th), Anton Klementyev (under 122nd) and Mikhail Pashnin (under 200th).
