He is the author of the first scientific works on the operetta in the USSR, the author of the musical comedy libretto, and the director of the Leningrad Variety Theater.

Having taken the artistic direction of the theater at the end of 1931 , Moses Osipovich Yankovsky declared the need for staging new Soviet operettas on his stage, to which he intended to involve D. Shostakovich , V. Bogdanov-Berezovsky, Yu. Shaporin , and also the transition of the theater to the classics and removing from the repertoire of all Vienna operettas. Such a radical change in the repertoire policy of the theater was fully consistent with the attitude to the Vienna operetta that prevailed in the USSR in the early 30s. According to the ideologists of culture and, as a result, of most theater critics, the “ploshchad” posed a serious danger to the fragile consciousness of the citizens of a young Soviet country. She was declared "class alien art", and the success of many productions on the stages of various theaters was explained by the fact that Nepman and the other "unconscious element" were attracted only by the image on the stage of luxurious life. Some of the most zealous even tried to discredit the music of the Vienna operetta. (See Musical Comedy Theater. History (link unavailable) )

He was buried at Komarovsky cemetery.
