History
The Transbaikal Military District (ZabVO) of the 1st formation was formed by order of the Military Council of the People's Revolutionary Army of the Far Eastern Republic (NRA Far Eastern Democratic Republic) on November 3, 1921 on the basis of the East Transbaikal District Directorate and the 1st Transbaikal Army that existed since August 1921. The district included the territories of the Transbaikal and Primorsky regions of the Far Eastern Republic and united not only military units, but also partisan formations in these territories. The troops of the district were actively fighting during the Civil War in Russia , including against the Japanese invaders . The district was abolished by order of the Military Council of the NRA Far Eastern Democratic Republic on May 2, 1922 , the troops transferred to its direct subordination.
The 2nd Trans-Baikal Military District was formed on May 17, 1935 by order of the USSR People's Commissar of Defense on the basis of the Trans-Baikal Group of the Special Red Banner Far Eastern Army and included the territory of the East Siberian Territory and the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic .
In 1937, the 25th armored brigade was formed in ZabVO, station No. 74 in the village of Yasnaya, Chita Region , stationed at the railway station. On May 1, 1938, the brigade was called the 25th Tank Brigade , and was subsequently reorganized into the 33rd Chemical Tank Brigade [1] , [2] .
In the prewar years, the troops of the district participated in the defeat of the Sino-Manchu and Japanese militarists who tried to invade the USSR ( Khasan fights (1938) ) and Mongolia ( Fights on Khalkhin-Gol (1939)) [3] .
In July 1940, the 16th Army was formed, covering the USSR state border in Transbaikalia . It included the 32nd rifle and 5th mechanized corps, the 126th corps artillery regiment and the 112th separate anti-aircraft artillery division .
On June 21, 1940, by order of the People's Commissar of Defense of the USSR, the 17th Army was formed on the basis of the 1st Army Group [4] .
On May 25, 1941, the 16th Army began its relocation to the Ukrainian SSR . The first echelons of the 16th army ( 109th motorized division of the 5th mechanized corps) were unloaded in the city of Berdichev on June 18.
On September 15, 1941, the Trans-Baikal Front was created on the basis of the district, and the district itself was disbanded. The 17th Army became part of the forces of the Transbaikal Front.
The 3rd Trans-Baikal Military District was formed by a resolution of the USSR Council of Ministers on May 25, 1947, when the Trans-Baikal-Amur Military District was divided. The command was formed partly on the basis of the management of this district, partly - on the basis of the 36th Army . The district included the territories of the Buryat-Mongol Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic , the Chita Region , as well as the Khabarovsk Territory (excluding the Kamchatka and Sakhalin Regions, which were part of this region at that time).
Until 1953, the district was subordinate to the High Command of the Far East . In 1953, after the abolition of the East Siberian Military District , the Irkutsk Region and the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic were included in the ZabVO, and the Khabarovsk Territory became part of the Far Eastern Military District . Since that time, the territory of ZabVO remained unchanged. In his submission was a grouping of Soviet troops in Mongolia .
District troops covered the main strategic and operational directions of the Far Eastern theater of operations. A sharp increase in the number of troops of the district occurred after the aggravation of Soviet-Chinese relations . In 1969, parts of the district participated in a border conflict on Damansky Island . In 1974, the district was awarded the Order of Lenin .
In 1979-1992, the district was under the strategic leadership of the High Command of the Far East . On December 1, 1998, the Trans-Baikal Military District was merged with the Siberian Military District. The Chita Region, the Republic of Buryatia and the Irkutsk Region became part of the new Siberian Military District (which became the successor of the Siberian Military District and ZabVO), and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) was transferred to the Far Eastern Military District.
In connection with the unification of the Siberian and Transbaikal military districts in 1998, the successor of the history of ZabVO, originating in 1935, according to the decision of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, became the new (unified) Siberian military district, and the historical path of the former Siberian Military District, the official date of formation of which is August 6 1865, - 41st Combined Arms Army , whose command was formed on the basis of the old Siberian Military District in Novosibirsk . The headquarters of the new Siberian Military District, like the former ZabVO, was located in Chita ( ).
On October 21, 2010, the Trans-Baikal Territory , as well as the Republic of Buryatia and Sakha (Yakutia) became part of the new Eastern Military District , and the Irkutsk Region was transferred to the subordination of the Central Military District . The headquarters of the Eastern Military District is located in Khabarovsk , the Central - in Yekaterinburg .
