Boetuseys ( Hebrew בייתוסים ) - used in Talmudic literature as one of the names for the Sadducees .
The sect existed for about a hundred years preceding the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. e [1] . First mentioned during Rabbi Yochanan ben-Zakkai [2] .
Soon after the final destruction of the Maccabeean dynasty by Herod ( 37 B.C.), the priestly clan of the Boetusseys joined the old Sadducean party, whose ancestor, Boetus , passed off his daughter as Herod and was the last to be elevated to the rank of high priest . Having gained power, the Boetusseans merged with the Sadducees in one party.
Some [3] scholars identify the Boetusians with the Essenes .
