Description

M. A. Kuznetsova and A. S. Reznikova give the following interpretation of the occurrence of the phytonym (folk name of the plant) Ivan da Maria [1] . Young people - a guy and a girl - passionately fell in love with each other, and then got married, not knowing that they are brother and sister. And when they found out about this, so as not to be parted, they turned into flowers - Ivan da Maria, painted in different colors. Since then, this flower has become a symbol of fidelity.

The flower was plucked for the holiday of Ivan Kupala . He was credited with magical properties: “Whoever wants to gallop away from a chase or fly great on a nag, carry the flower of Ivan-da-Marya with you. Others give drink juice squeezed from this flower in order to regain hearing or a lost mind ” [2] .

The most popular are two plants:

  • Ivan da Marya, Mariannik , Brother with sister, Zheltyanitsa, Ivanovo grass - Mariannik oak ( Melampyrum nemorosum L. ), an annual grassy plant from the Norichen family ( Scrophulariaceae ), with yellow flowers and bright blue bracts , that is, the upper leaves of everything plants [3] . In Russia, it often grows in groves and meadows, often in the shade, along the forest edges; blooms in late June.
  • Pansies , or Tricolor violet ( Viola tricolor L. ) (its third color - white - is not taken into account) - in its wild form and in garden differences [4] .

Five to six similar plants use this name much less frequently [4] : Geneva survivor , or hairy survivor ( Ajuga genevensis L. ) with white-fluffy bracts and blue flowers, meadow sage ( Salvia pratensis L. ) - also with a contrast of dark -Blue flowers and gray-green bracts; sometimes the Vinca minor L. is also called so, but similar names, like many (Russian) plants, are based on too rough and carelessly analyzed similarities [4] .
