History

The very first written version of the song can be seen in Alexandra and Vladimir Zheleznov’s [3] in the book “Songs of the Ural Cossacks” (St. Petersburg, 1899, pp. 12-14, No. 6) under the title “Razin sees a dream” . It was recorded in the 1880s from the "75-year-old old Cossack F. S. Zh."

There is also a song with similar text in the section “Family Songs” (No. 4, without a name) by A. Savelyev’s book “Collection of Don Folk Songs”, published in St. Petersburg in 1866 [4] :

Like today a good fellow
Small little slept, a lot of dreams seemed:
“As if my black horse played out
He broke out, burst out dancing under the daring good fellow
The cunny hat fell off my lush head
The bow came off with a quiver from my right side.
All the small pages sprinkled,
They dug the ground into the cheese.
Ah, you, my brothers, brothers, chieftains well done!
Do not leave the good fellow, you with such a vigilance
Like at any time I’ll come in handy for you brothers
I will replace your death with my breast.
Tell me, my brethren, that my dream will ring. ”
My mother heard me because of the high tower:
“Oh you child, my child, my dear child!
Here I am you, child, this dream I will tell:
Somehow, my child, but to listen to the listener:
Yes to the servants, a child of you to be killed,
Your black horse to be trimmed
Your young wife be satisfied
To your little orphans. ”

Based on the folk song by the Leningrad composer, Galina Ustvolskaya wrote and in 1949 the epic for the voice and symphony orchestra “Stepan Razin’s Dream” was performed.
