Kapensky gate

Serviev wall and city gate.

Kapensky gates ( Latin Porta Capena ) - the ancient city gates of Rome near Celius , which were part of the Servius wall .

The gate was named in honor of the Kapenskaya grove. From this gate began the Appian Way and Via Latina. The name of the gate comes possibly from the city of Capua , in which the Appian Way led, or from the Etruscan word Capena [1] . Emperor Domitian restored the Kapensky Gate at the end of the 1st century, while the gate lost its significance as a city gate in a very large city.

In the years 1867-1868, the ruins of the gate and part of the Servius wall were excavated, but today they are no longer visible.
