Before the start of the season, the composition of the club was noticeably updated: Sean Avery , Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shenahan left , contracts were signed with Marcus Neslund , Nikolai Zherdev , Aaron Vorosh and Wade Redden . The acquisitions allowed fans to expect the start of the championship with optimism [1] .
After five pre-season games in North America, the team went to Europe, where on September 30 they beat the Swiss “ Bern ” in a friendly match with a score of 8: 1. In the match for the Victoria Cup on October 1 in Bern , the Rangers beat Metallurg from Magnitogorsk with a score of 4: 3, losing 0-3 in the course of the match. The winning goal was scored by Ryan Callahan 20 seconds before the end of the third period [2] . The club also held the first two games of the NHL championship against Tampa Bay Lightning in Europe; the matches took place on October 4 and 5 in Prague [3] . According to the results of the first thirteen games of the season, the team set club records for the number of wins (10) and points scored (21) at the start of the championship [4] . In an interview with the New York Post, the goalkeeper of the team, Stephen Valikett, said that his trip to Europe helped the players to rally and successfully start the season [5] .
After successful starting weeks, the recession began and by the middle of the season the team was close to not getting into the playoffs. February 23, 2009 the head coach of the team Tom Renny was fired. In his place was invited the 2004 Stanley Cup winner John Tortorella [6] . The club also replenished Nikolai Antropov and Derek Morris . Also, Sean Avery returned to the club, put up by the Dallas draft rejection [1] .
Having finished seventh in the Eastern Conference, the Rangers met the Washington Capitals in the first round of the playoffs. Quite unexpectedly, the New Yorkers won the first two games on a foreign field, and then exchanged victories at home and led in the series 3-1. In the fifth game, thanks to the second dry match in the series of Semyon Varlamov , the Capitals took over. Then the Rangers lost twice more and lost the series with a score of 3: 4 [7] .
