History

The history of the Lugansk airport began in 1946 , when in order to improve the aviation service of the regions of the Ukrainian SSR, the 285th aviation squad began its work. It was charged with aviation maintenance of the Voroshilovgrad region . After many renames, the detachment became the Lugansk joint detachment of the Ukrainian Civil Aviation Authority of the USSR Civil Aviation Authority.

1964 is considered the year of the opening of the Lugansk airport. Its construction was carried out at an accelerated pace, with the involvement of many organizations of the Lugansk region (Bryankovskiy DSU Luganskshakhtostroy ( Bryanka town), Lugansk DSU of the Luganskdorstroy trust, Illichivsk repair plant, Kadievsky and Krasnoluchsky autotrust). For the six months from May to October 1964, the terminal building was erected, the runways were equipped, hangars and technical and auxiliary services were built.

In 1974, the 99th flight squadron was created at the airport, which included 6 An-24 aircraft [2] , and since 1989, 2 Tu-154B-2 aircraft. In the 1980s, up to 100 flights from every Voroshilovgrad airport to almost 70 cities of the Soviet Union were made daily, and at least 1,200 passengers were transported daily. The airport sent and received flights of IL-18 , An-24 , Yak-40 , Yak-42 , Tu-134 , Tu-154 aircraft .

In 2005–2006 , the runway and the airport were reconstructed, which made it possible to receive Airbus A320 , Boeing 737 , and An-124 aircraft . By 2010, the base airline Lugansk Airlines stopped flights, it was replaced by UTair-Ukraine .

Message

In 2013, regular flights to Kiev and Moscow were operated by UTair and UTair-Ukraine airlines from Lugansk, and charter flights were made to Antalya by UIA and to Thessaloniki by Greek airline Astra Airlines .

Since April 2014, there are no regular flights at the airport for economic and socio-political reasons [3] [4] . Since May, due to hostilities, the work of the airport has been suspended, the airspace is closed to civil aviation flights by order of the State Aviation Service of Ukraine.
