Biography
The son of a shoemaker. He participated in the Second World War , was seriously injured. He made his debut in 1947 , published in newspapers, wrote for the radio. In 1951 founded the Vienna school of avant-garde poetry. Since 1954 he traveled a lot, was in Holland, Belgium, France, Spain, in 1961 - 1965 he lived in Sweden, then in Berlin and Salzburg . In 1973, he established the Anti-PEN Club and the Graz Authors Community - the largest association of Austrian writers along with the Austrian PEN Club, became its first president.
Creativity
He wrote mainly in the Vienna dialect, as well as in German, combining the images of folklore and children's poetry with the poetry of futurism and surrealism , emphasized by semantic absurdism and rampant verbal experimentation. He translated from several languages, including the works of Villon , S. Turner , Calderon , Quevedo , Lope de Vega , Tirso de Molina , Moliere , Goldoni , Beaumarchais , Marivo , Labiche , Feydo , Jarry , Holberg , Strindberg , E. Lear , Lovecraft and others. He acted as a screenwriter and librettist (collaborated with HC Gruber and others). The author of books for children, translated one of the volumes of The Adventures of Asterix .

Recognition
Winner of the Grand State Prize of Austria ( 1974 ), the Literary Prize of Vienna ( 1977 ), Salzburg ( 1991 ) and the Land of Styria ( 1999 ), the Grilparzer Prizes ( 1992 ) and Georg Buchner ( 1997 ), Honorary Doctor of the University of Salzburg ( 1991 ).
Since 2004, the Vienna H.K. Artmann Prize has been awarded.
