History

It is believed that the village of Kilmez was founded by the Mari at the beginning of the XVII century . According to legend, a group of Maris ran on rafts along the Kilmezi River from the Udmurts . It was late autumn. Mari saw the hill Red Mountain and climbed it for a comfortable defense. As a result, the settlement of Kilmez formed. There are two points of view on the translation of the word “Kilmez”: “To leave and not to return” (due to the marshland) and “The river has risen”.

The village has been known since 1666 . In the late XIX - early XX centuries, the population was engaged in agriculture, artisanal brick production, processing of agricultural raw materials, etc. Since 1965, the urban type settlement.
