Biography
He began his musical studies under the guidance of Henry Gadsby , then he studied at the Royal Academy of Music with George Macfarren (composition) and William George Cousins (piano), in 1875 - 1878 . He continued his studies at the Cologne Conservatory with Ferdinand Hiller as a composer and Isidor Zaiss as a pianist. After returning to England in 1879 , he led several opera troupes, taught at the Royal Academy of Music, and in 1889 headed it.
He wrote the opera Death of King Arthur ( fr. La Morte d'Arthur ; 1879 , by Thomas Malory ) and Nordiz ( English; Nordisa ; 1887 ), the operetta The Storm in a Glass of Water ( eng. A Storm in a Teacup ; 1882 ), several cantatas. He published books "Orchestra and How to Compose for Him" ( eng. The Orchestra and 1895 ) and "Modern Composition" ( eng. Modern Composition ; 1909 ). He is also known as a propagandist of Richard Wagner in England, the author (together with his wife, Henrietta Walford), the first English translation of the cycle of operas The Ring of Nibelung .
