Biography
Lee is often compared with Ken Loach , which, according to the director himself, is not entirely true due to the lack of a political component in his paintings. Avoiding sensational presentation and not falling into melodrama, Lee confidently develops themes of human relations between ordinary, unremarkable people, often belonging to the working class .
A graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , Lee was considered a promising theater actor in the late 1960s. For a long time he hesitated between television and cinema, having no success in any of these areas. The long-awaited recognition was brought to him by the films “ High Expectations ” (1988) and “ Nudes ” (1993, prize for best directing at the Cannes Film Festival ).
In 1996, his family drama “ Secrets and Lies ” won the Golden Palm Branch , and the Golden Globe was awarded the lead role. Eight years later, Lee left the Golden Lion Venice Festival for a much more pessimistic picture of Vera Drake , which was later marked by several Oscar nominations.
In 2008, Lee read the main award of the Berlin Film Festival for the comedy " Carefree ", but the matter was limited to " Silver Bear " the best actress. If he had won the Golden Bear , Mike Lee would have become the only living winner of the main awards of all three of the world's most prestigious film festivals. [four]
