History

A monument commissioned by the Government of the MPR [1] was cast at the Leningrad Foundry [2] and installed on the basis of the Decree of the Presidium of the Small State Khural of the MPR of December 20, 1949 in honor of the 70th birthday of Stalin [3] .

Contrary to the requests of the Soviet leader N. S. Khrushchev, the MPR leader Yu. Tsedenbal refused to dismantle the monument [4] [5] . It is known that in other countries of the socialist camp, monuments to Stalin were dismantled everywhere. The monument was nevertheless dismantled on the night of December 22, 1990 [2] using three self-propelled cranes and a bulldozer. Thus, the monument became the last monument to Stalin, who stood in the capital of the state (except for Russia) [6] . The dismantled statue was sprinkled with milk and milk vodka. According to the author of the work “Struggle with Monuments and Memory in the Post-Soviet Space” Levon Abrahamyan, this was done in order “so that the spirit of Stalin so propitiated would never return” [7] . The sculpture was sent for storage to the public premises of the library, where it was stored in a specially made wooden box [8] . The pedestal of the monument was also dismantled.

In June 2005, a monument to the Mongolian scientist B. Rinchin (sculptor C. Amgalan ) was inaugurated in its place. In 2001, a four-meter statue of Stalin was acquired by one entrepreneur and installed in the summer cafe "Ismus" [9] . Thus, the Ismus brewery became famous as the only place in the world in which a multi-meter statue of Stalin was installed [10] .
