Biography
Ortiz is a pupil of the football school of the Millionarios club. By 1971, when Ortiz made his debut in the main team, the "millionaires" had already lost their position as one of the strongest clubs in South America and the world. During the 1970s, Willington twice won the championship of Colombia as part of his native team.
In 1980, he moved to Deportivo Cali, and after 3 years - to America from the same city. In the 1980s, this team began to dominate Colombian football, confirming its strength in the international arena. “America” won 4 championships in Colombia in a row - from 1983 to 1986, and in the Copa Libertadores three times reached the final (in 1985-1987). Moreover, only the outdated rules by which it was required to play an extra match in case of equality of points, without taking into account goals scored, did not allow the club to celebrate success in the 1987 draw. Ortiz has been a key figure in all of these successes.
As part of the Colombian national team, Ortiz was a participant in the 1972 Olympic Games , three times - the America's Cup (tournament finalist in 1975), as well as three qualifying rounds for the world championships (1974, 1978, 1982). However, Ortiz did not play at the world championships - largely because of this, another outstanding Colombian football player - Carlos Valderrama , is more famous in the world, in which the team regularly performed at world championships.
Willington Ortiz's farewell match took place on March 15, 1989. America Cali met with the best club in the world at that time - Uruguayan Nacional . The match was attended by such stars as Hugo Gatti , Norberto Alonso , Jorge Da Silva .
In the 1990s, Willington Ortiz was often invited to television, starred as a football coach in the series "De Pies a Cabeza".
In 2002, he became a deputy of the Colombian Senate , being a representative of the Afro-Colombian movement.
