In 1972, at the Sapporo Olympics, the little-known 21-year-old Spanish skier sensationally won the slalom, ahead of the famous Italian Gustav Toni and his cousin Roland by more than a second. After Gustav Tony won the giant slalom on February 9 , many predicted his victory in slalom, but on February 13 , on the last day of the ski program of the Olympics, the Spaniard turned over all the cards.

In addition to the Olympic victory in the account of Fernandez-Ochoa, the bronze of the 1974 World Cup in slalom and 1 victory at the World Cup stage - on March 6, 1974 in Zakopane, Poland (the only victory in the history of Spanish men at the Alpine skiing World Cup).

Pakito also participated in the next two Olympics - in 1976 and 1980 - but did not achieve much success there (9th place in slalom in 1976).

Fernandez-Ochoa died of cancer at the age of 56 in November 2006 in Madrid. A few days before his death in Madrid, a monument was unveiled in his honor. Francisco attended the ceremony.

Interesting Facts

  • In addition to the gold of Fernandez-Ochoa, the Spaniards won only 1 more medal at the Winter Olympics, and this medal was counted by the younger sister of Pacito Blanca Fernandez-Ochoa , who became the third in slalom at the Olympics in Albertville in 1992 .
  • German Johan Mullegg at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, flying the Spanish flag, won 3 gold medals in cross-country skiing , but was disqualified for using darbepoetin a few days later. Thus, Fernandez-Ochoa remains the only "winter" Olympic champion from Spain.
  • In addition to Blanca and Francisco, 2 more brothers and 1 sister Fernandez Ochoa participated in alpine skiing competitions at the Olympic Games: Dolores (born 1966, participated in the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo), Juan Manuel (born 1951, participated in the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck) and Louis (born 1965, participated in the Olympics in 1984 and 1988). They did not achieve much success - no one has ever managed to get even among the top 15.
