Biography

Descended from a noble family of Polivanov , son of artillery, lieutenant Ivan Gavrilovich Polivanov (1799–1868) (participant of the Russian-Turkish war , author of notes on the war) and Praskovya Vasilievna (ne. Demidova) (great-granddaughter Prokof Akinfievich Demidov ). From 1844 he lived in Moscow, studied in the 1st and 4th gymnasiums. In 1861 he graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Moscow University .

From 1864 to 1875 he taught Russian language and literature in his native 4th Moscow gymnasium. In 1868 he opened in Moscow ( Prechistenka , house 32) a private men's classical gymnasium [2] , the director of which was until the end of his life. Many future famous Russian writers studied in this school: Valery Bryusov , Maximilian Voloshin , Andrey Bely , Vadim Shershenevich , Sergey Shervinsky , Sergey Efron , Nikolai Poznyakov , chess player Alexander Alekhin and many others.

As a methodologist philologist of the logical-stylistic direction, Lev Ivanovich considered the development of logical thinking and literary speech in students to be the main goal of studying literature at school. He played for the historical principle in the teaching of the Russian language. He was the compiler of a number of reissued school chrestomathies and textbooks of the Russian language. The author of works on V. A. Zhukovsky , A. S. Pushkin , L. N. Tolstoy, and others, publisher and editor of works of classics of Russian literature, translated by J. Racine , P. Corneille .

Polivanov became one of the founders of poetry , who studied the rhythm of 6-foot iamba in Russian poetry of the 18th — 19th centuries. (Preface to the translation of "Atalia" Racine).

He was buried in the cemetery of the Novodevichy Convent in Moscow. At the expense of graduates and teachers of the Polivanovsky gymnasium, a gravestone in the Old Russian style was constructed according to the project of S. U. Solovyov . In Soviet times, the grave was transferred to the Novodevichy cemetery .
