Trigger cable

A mechanical release cable connected to the Amateur-166V camera

Trigger cable - a thin steel cable in a flexible metal shell, screwed at one end into a special socket or trigger button on the camera . The main purpose of the release cable is to isolate the camera from vibrations that can be caused by the photographer’s hand when you press the shutter button [1] . At the opposite end of the cable is a spring-loaded push button, sometimes equipped with a latch for slow shutter speeds [2] .

The cable is used for shooting with manual exposure or in the case of multiple exposures to avoid unwanted camera movement. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, pneumatic descent with a rubber bulb on a hose connected to the valve served for the same purpose. The trigger cable in those years was called "metal trigger" [3] . Some types of narrow-film amateur movie cameras were equipped with trigger cables. For example, in the cameras of the Krasnogorsk series, the cable was used both to start the mechanism during normal filming and to activate it during single-frame shooting [4] .

Mechanical cables are suitable with cameras equipped with mechanical shutters. To ensure compatibility, there is an international standard ISO of tapered thread for attaching cables, so the vast majority of cameras around the world are compatible with any cables. In modern cameras with electromechanical shutters for remote release, instead of a mechanical drive, an electric wire with a contact group included in the circuit parallel to the shutter button can be used. In most cases, this simplifies the shutter design, and a slot for a mechanical cable is not provided in cameras since the late 1980s. The electric extension cord has completely replaced the mechanical drive, and therefore is often called a cable. Most professional and amateur digital SLR cameras are equipped with a special connector for connecting a remote shutter.

The same connector can be used to connect to an infrared or wireless shutter release module. In the presence of autofocus, the remote electric release duplicates the function of pressing the shutter button, which activates the focus and exposure meter . Unlike mechanical cables that comply with the global standard, electrical extension cords are only compatible with certain cameras or their families. This is due to the different functionality and features of the equipment interface of various brands . The most advanced versions of electric start extension cords are additionally equipped with a timer .
