Vernon Lomax Smith ( born Vernon Lomax Smith ; born January 1, 1927 , Wichita , pc. Kansas ) is an American economist . Winner of the 2002 Economics Prize in Memory of Alfred Nobel "for laboratory experiments as a tool in empirical economic analysis, especially in the analysis of alternative market mechanisms" [5] [6] . Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, California Institute of Technology (1949). Master of Economics at the University of Kansas (1952). He received his doctorate at Harvard (1955).
He taught at Purdue Universities , George Mason , Massachusetts Institute of Technology ; Research Center for Neuroeconomics , president of the International Fund for Experimental Economic Research.
President of the Association of Economic Science (1986-1987) and the Society of "Public Choice" (1988-1990). Adam Smith Prize Laureate (1995).
International Foundation for Experimental Economic Research
In 1997, Smith founded The International Foundation for Research in Experimental Economics , IFREE, a private philanthropic institution dedicated to supporting the experimental research methodology in economics. The board of directors of the fund includes well-known economists: D. North , C. McCabe . One of the activities of the fund is to support (in the form of scholarships) doctoral students involved in experimental economic research. The foundation also sponsors neuroeconomic research. .
Community Activities
In 2016, he signed a letter calling on Greenpeace , the United Nations and governments around the world to stop the fight against genetically modified organisms (GMOs) [8] [9] [10] .
