Life and work

Born in the family of a judge of the New York State Supreme Court Alfred Frankenthaler. In 1945 - 1950 she studied painting at various art schools in Vermont and New York. Among her teachers stands Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo .

In terms of art, she was heavily influenced by the works of Jackson Pollock , with whom she participated in the Abstract Art Movement . After visiting the exhibition of the latter at Betty Parsons Gallery in 1951, she adopted his technique, laying out sheets of canvas on the studio floor and painting with drops of paint. At the same time, the individual style of the artist was developed. The canvas was supposed to be without primer, and the paint - diluted to such an extent that they were absorbed into the canvas almost instantly. In addition to this, E. Frankenthaler rubbed the paint into the canvas with a sponge. As a result, the effect of “current” paints on the canvas was created, which made her work related to surreal automatism . In 1959, the artist takes part in the exhibition of contemporary art of document -2 in Kassel .

In later works, in the 60s, he created monumental canvases up to 3 meters high on a painted canvas without a primer, in which various color tones are combined. With these works, E. Frankentaler had a great impact on the young generation of American artists who worked in the style of painting the color field ( Colorfield Paint ) - Kenneth Noland , Jules Olitsky , Maurice Louis .

E. Frankenthaler was married to American abstract artist Robert Motherwell .
