Geography

In the north and north-west it borders on the Adrar region , in the east on the Hod-el-Sharqi region , in the south on the Hod el-Gharbi and Assab regions , in the west on the Brakna region. The region is located on the Tagant plateau.

History

At the beginning of the XVIII century, an independent emirate Tagant was formed. He was the only one of the Mauritanian emirates of this period, created not by the Arab (Hassan) tribes, but by the Berber (Marabut) tribe of the go (Yedau izz), descended from the Lemtun tribal association. In the west it was bordered by the Emirates of Brakna and Trarza , in the north - by Adrar . The main occupation of the population was nomadic herding; in the oases there was agriculture and gardening. In the XIX century, the territory of Taganta was far from the main trade routes and was less influenced by Europeans. At the turn of the XIX — XX centuries, the French began to penetrate into this area, which the Emir Taganta Bakar Ould Suyd Ahmed (1836-1905) tried to prevent, but was not supported by the country's population. After the death of Bakar in 1905, Tagant came under the protectorate of France. The policy of the leadership of Taganta, loyal to the dominant authorities, ensured the preservation of the emirate under the colonial regime and as part of an independent Mauritania.
