Lunar bone

Lunar bone ( lat. Os lunatum , lit. "moon bone") - one of the bones of the wrist . It is located in the proximal row, the second on the radial side (between the scaphoid and trihedral bones); the radius bone is located proximal to it, and the bones of the second row of the wrist are distal to it. The bone got its name because of its shape resembling a young month.

Anatomy

A bone has several surfaces:

  • The upper (proximal) surface is convex and smooth, adjacent to the carpal articular surface of the radius, takes part in the formation of the wrist joint .
  • The lower (distal) surface is concave, its anteroposterior size prevails over the transverse; it is adjacent to the head of the capitate bone and the hook bone, taking part in the formation of the mid-carpal joint.
  • The back and palmar surfaces of the bone are rough, ligaments are attached to them, strengthening the joints between the bones of the forearm and wrist.
  • The lateral surface of the bone is narrow, flattened, articulates with the scaphoid.
  • The medial surface of the bone is a smooth four-sided face, articulating with a trihedral bone.

A similar bone in reptiles and amphibians is referred to as an β€œintermediate bone” because of its position between two other proximal bones of the wrist.

Clinical Importance

The lunar bone is dislocated more often than other bones of the wrist [1] [2] .
